Our kidding season has begun and is in full swing. We have 7 does in milk so far.

Our homebred doe Ana was the first one to freshen. She has developed a beautiful udder with very nice teats and open orifices. I am so proud, as I see so much improvement in her udder from her dam. Havana, passed great traits, so I am excited for the prospect of his other daughters having the same results. She gave us a gorgeous big chocolate buckling. Unfortunately, he is not eligible to be registered, since Ana is a Grade Nubian. He already has a lovely home lined up for him to go to as a grade herd sire.

Next to kid was Willow, who came to us bred by a Nigerian Dwarf. We were all hoping that wasnt the case, but unfortunately as with ND's, they have very little to no boundaries that can keep them from getting to a doe in season. It is ok, because we wanted these new girls to our farm to be a part of milk test group. She kidded two very cute mini Nubian bucklings. They have beautiful roan coloring and are just adorable.

Our beloved Cayenne did not dissapoint as usual, delivering us yet another buckling as she always does. I was praying for a gender change with this one, since it was a Kenai kid. He is absolutely gorgeous though, and I am not against keeping him as a backup. He holds great genetics, and even though his dam is a grade, she is one of our milkiest does. We love her conformation, udder and milking capabilities. I am super excited to get her on test!

The breeding we did with Cee Cee and Kenai was much anticipitated and very important to us and our breeding program. When we saw Cee Cee was going into labor, the excitement to see what this pairing was going to give us was driving us crazy. She made us wait long enough of course. As we waited, we all took our guesses on what she was going to deliver. Personally, I was really hoping I would get a buckling. The boys guessed doelings, because they know we would be keeping them. Ken guessed a buckling and doeling, and he was the winner of the guessing game. I was so extremely happy, I mean, no words can express my happiness. Kenai will have a buckling to continue passing his genetics down. The doeling will have a future here on the farm as a milker and will be tested as well to prove Kenai. What an incredible moment to witness. The buckling is a stunner. He looks very similar to his sire. The doeling is very beautiful, and they are both displaying so much dairyness, beautiful conformation and breed character.
Henrietta is another doe that came to us bred, unknowingly. It is an unfortunate situation as she had been bred to her own 2024 buckling. Sometimes people get into raising goats without true understanding of everything it entails. While im a firm believer that people deserve a chance to learn goat husbandry, there are instances where common sense evades even the best of intentions. Henrietta was still nursing her 10 month old buck and doe twin "kids", which is an impressive display of lactation longevity might I add. The fact of the matter is that her buckling was well passed the age of consent. He most likely bred his twin sister too. The result of this, is a deformed buckling, and two doelings that did not survive. Its dissapointing, and I feel bad that the previous owners were not in a position to separate the group when they needed to. Its as though they truly did not know. The buckling will be culled for meat, as he is not fit to live longer than six months if even. The bright side is that Henrietta is in milk, and we are excited for her to be on milk test.

Our Boer doe Joy finally released her hostages after a month of leaking amniotic fluid, and keeping me on high alert the entire time. I knew she was going to give us triplets again and had been saying it over and over. She did not let me look like a fool! Two bucklings and a beautiful dappled doeling that was born breach. Joy had no issues birthing her though. Their sire is Merlin.

Aspen is another doe that came to us bred. I had hoped that she was just very fat and had not gotten the wrath of the Nigerian Dwarf who violated her twin sister Willow. We were sorely dissapointed! She kidded a single buckling and it was quite the suprise, as her udder did not develop or show signs of her going to kid. I havent taken a closer look at it yet but from afar almost non existent. Although, her buckling is getting milk and doing well. I dont want to be too harsh on judging her, as she is a first freshener. I am familiar with these lines, and I know some take multiple freshenings to mature their production and udder. Very glad that she kidded with no assistance, and her buckling seems to be very hardy. All good things!
Several does are still left to kid. I will share a diary as they happen on our blog. Hope everyone has a safe and happy kidding season!
